The open access publishing movement has moved on since the first online
open access journals in the 1980s and the physics open access sources of the
1990s. Open access to the document and research resources of large
international institutions often offers a larger and pragmatically more
useful body of knowledge than that of academic journals.
For design students on engineering degrees, there's free open access to
the enormous design and research resources of the IMechE. It includes a
substantial on-line library of research findings, transactions and
information relating to design covering 200 years as well as the Knovel
knowledge base. This is via the free student affiliate membership of the
