medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
two of the responses to George's original query have made me aware of just how
ignerint i am of the ecclesiastical set up which prevailed out there on the
Western Fringe during the Dark Ages.
1)
From: Jon Cannon <[log in to unmask]>
>When Henry IV excommunicated Archbishop Scrope of York...
ummm... [King, i presume] Hank 4 "excommunicated" the Archbishop of York?
since when could a King "excommunicate" a bishop/archbishop?
drive him out of town and over to some civilized region of Europe, yes, but
*excommunicate* him?
what kind of a railroad were you folks running out there?
b)
From: ANDREW MILLIGAN <[log in to unmask]>
>...the archbishop of Canterbury.... wrote to the bishop of London (the dean
of the province of Canterbury)...
i've never come across this term/office "dean of the province" in France.
i assume that it was a peculiarly Western Fringe phenomenon?
was this "dean" --who apparently also happened to be a bishop himself-- some
kind of "vice-archbishop" for the province?
what were his duties?
when was this odd practice established?
and, why for?
all information about these or any other of the Bizarre Idiosyncrasies of the
Western Fringe is always welcome to the Unenlightened.
