Under no circumstances record in MP3 format. The quality is very poor and
quiet sounds can be very distorted and quiet speech made unintelligible by
MP3 compression. Record at full quality and convert to MP3 afterwards.
Any recorder you use should be capable of recording at CD quality (16 bit
44KHz). The Zoom machine is good enough although more expensive recorders by
Tascam, Olympus and Sony will have better microphones. You can also connect
external mics to all these machines.
You can also record direct to a computer using software like Audacity (free)
by plugging a mic into the sound input. For better quality I would recommend
using a studio quality vocal mic and pop shield, but for that you would need
an external USB audio interface that has the necessary XLR input and 48v
phantom power.
Thank You
