medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
We don't need to back quite that far, though many things have deep roots
indeed. In between the Greeks and late medieval images of Sebastian come
the early medieval concepts of "elf shot" and demonic arrows as the
proximate causes of disease. Many scholars who have studied Anglo-Saxon
charms and medicine, notably including Karen Jolly, have discussed the
issue. Relevant images are those for psalm 37 (38) in the related
Utrecht, Harley, Eadwine, and Paris Psalters.

The gist of the Iliad was known in the Middle Ages.
