medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
apologies for cross-posting
I have posted a new batch of images to my online archive. Many are from
the Sens museum that contains the cathedral treasury; notable
inclusions: a reliquary that I think is closely related to the Enger
Reliquary in Berlin, Merovingian to 11th c. relic labels, an 8th c.
western textile with the Assumption of the Virgin, numerous other
textiles, and a relic of the Crown of Thorns from the Sainte Chapelle.
More from Sens will be posted later.

On other pages I have posted the first of my photos from Brussels: the
12th-c. crystal and enamel cross from Scheldewindeke, and a 7th/8th-c.
reliquary with Crucifixion.

Anyone know of other representations of the Widow of Sarepta?
Among other miscellany, fans of dragons should like the effigy of a
queen (Marie de Brienne?) at Saint-Denis

I have not been able to find any recent scholarship on the Assumption
textile, and would be interested to learn about any other Assumptions
that are this early, and anything about the cloth's production-- it
looks like an extremely elaborate terrycloth towel.
The portable reliquary, most unusually, retains its leather carrying
strap, and still contains relic labels and what appear to be relic
bundles. The curator tells me that the textiles inside have never been
studied, so if anyone is looking for a great project....
I have posted a few undated items at the end of the page, and would be
grateful for any ideas about their chronology. For that matter, the
ivory part of the 'Comb of St. Loup' looks earlier than the metalwork,
but not as early as the saint's 7th-c. date (as suggested by the museum
labels). Any thoughts?
best,
Genevra
