medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I don't know that it was codified, but such was the standard practice among the Russians into the nineteenth century (I think during most of the 20th century, only KGB agents were allowed to become priests in Russia--just kidding, sort of)

Indeed, I recall reading in some episcopal statutes somewhere from the Early MA that
ONLY the sons of priests were allowed to be priets without special dispensation! Possible
Hillgarth's book on conversion? Wish I could find this passage again . . .

I would add that informal apprenticeship, rather than formal training, would have been the norm before celibacy was the norm-guys learning the craft from their fathers.

I think the apprenticeship to the priesthood was ;more the norm than the exception. There were no seminaries in the modern sense, and even those who did have a medieval education still had to apprentice with an experienced priest.
I good place to start for your period is an essay by Joseph Goering in the collection Pathways to Medieval Peasants, ed. J. Raftis. I cannot remember the title but I do know it is about the "emergence" of the parish after 1050.

Greetings all,
"Medieval Christianity in Practice" ed. Miri Rubin contains a wonderful contract whereby a young
man in 1340s Treviso, Italy, apprenticed himself to learn the craft of priesthood (pp. 110-11).
Does anyone have similar examples, or reference to boys training for the priesthood with a priest (rather than at a cathedral or monastery)? Any references welcome, but I'm particularly interested
in more northerly examples from the 12th c. or earlier.
Meg
PS One of the things I particularly like about this document is the way the young man establishes himself as of age (18) and able to act on his own behalf "like a public merchant"
