medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I immediately thought of an Aristotelian connection, too. I can't help noticing, too, how it might be connected to some of the Christological heresies, e.g., the Monophysites or Nestorians (which would seem apropos to the Canticle of Mary).

Sounds like the long shadow of Aristotle, which took many forms as it
worked its way to Arabic philosophers (e.g. Avicenna) and Aquinas.

For there are those who contend that in every human there are two souls: one rational and one sensible, [the latter of which is] without reason like the souls of brute beasts. They try to prove this opinion with certain rational arguments and authorities. For they say that the rational soul (animam) is infused into the womb only after the body has been formed, just as we read regarding the first human that his body was formed first and then life was breathed into his nostrils."
