Gemmers,
Jenni Jibbs made an excellent contribution on the inequity within the public sector. Yes, this issue is more complex than public vs private.
However, I live and work in Norwich. A pocket of Labour and Green within a vast sea of blue in Norfolk. The turnout today against Govt policy was tremendous.
These people are predominantly not Heads or managers. They are being shafted by a govt who are on an ideological mission to destroy the public sector. I am not a member of the SWP, by the way. (Not that that's a bad thing.) Just read the fabulous comment by Polly Toynbee in today's Guardian, beginning 'The Injustice is breathtaking'.
Not one policy will hit the top 10% of earners negatively.
Anyone of a liberal nature (tho the lib dems in govt have forgotten where they've come from) such as us in the cultural sector need to stand up whenever and however we can. And this is v difficult. I stood up to the practices that one museum carried out as they were unjust and lost employment as a result. (That museum is now continuing to do the same but on a bigger scale.)
To return to Jenni's point: injustice in whatever sector is wrong. I spend most of my time as a museum educator exploring this issue in the past. It's ever-present, isn't it? We need to find out and challenge the ways this occurs.
