medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Terri Morgan <[log in to unmask]>
> Caprasius of Agen ....His originally twelfth-century church at Agen
(Lot-et-Garonne) in Aquitaine is now that city's cathedral. Here is Caprasius'
martyrdom as depicted on one of the capitals (medieval but re-worked? entirely
nineteenth-century?): http://tinyurl.com/ygk83sc
the sculpture itself definitely looks O.K. (i.e., original early 12th c.,
unrestored) to me.
the paint is 19th c. (looks like it was done during the reign of Pious IX
http://www.romanes.org/Agen//Cathedrale_Saint_Caprais_d_Agen_0016.html
but it may be more or less following the original polychromy, surely so in
picking out the lettering of the inscriptions.
i suspect that the 19th c. paint may have been everywhere --as can be seen on
other caps, like
http://romanes.free.fr//FR-Agen-Sainte_Caprais-7296-0021.jpg
and was only removed in the last few years.
the figure --and foliate-- style seem to be very much influenced by styles
from further East (Toulouse comes to mind):

the Agnus Dei held by the two angels on the impost block
http://www.romanes.org/Agen//Cathedrale_Saint_Caprais_d_Agen_0012.html
is a Dead Ringer (in both iconography and style) for one in St. Sernin.
or maybe i'm having a Senior Moment and am thinking of something from the
Moissac cloister (not all that far away).
some of them look to be a bit later than either Toulouse or the Moissac
cloister, to my eye,

perhaps as late as the 1120s(?).
clearly a different hand at work in 0022 --though in the same "shop" and
campaign.
