> The mad snapper possibly had better access than I did and certainly has the
advantage of using digital equipment (my image is a scan of a 35mm
transparency taken in the early 90's when the glass had not been cleaned. I
think I could get a good result with my digital equipment today and with the
glass in its present condition..
it wasn't my intention to criticize your work, Gordon, which, as i said is
really quite good (and certainly a much-appreciated asset to this list).
but, that being said, Henri de Feraudy (a.k.a. "The Mad Snapper"/"Snappageno")
is in something of a class by himself, esp. as a photographer of stained
glass.
though all of his most recent work is digital, there are some examples of some
of his earlier film shots [now digitized] on that site ("Scanned pictures of
most of the stained glass, dating from before 2006"):

most recently, he has been using some kind of program (he's also a 'puter
geek) which "stitches together" several different shots, taken at different
exposures, in order to end up with a composite which contains "perfect"
exposures of, not just the various colors/densities/light levels of the glass,
but also allows for the surrounding stones to be visible.
the result is a quite marvelous effect, and one which cannot be duplicated
using the now-ancient, conventional film photography of the last millennium:

he has also enjoyed some exceptional access to parts of the building

(that's not Henri in the shot in the bottom row --apparently just some old
clochard who hangs out there, above the triforium)

he has gained access to the studio which has been in charge of the recent
"restoration" of the glass (here from one of the lancets of the west facade):

and he has also shot some of the interior vaults after their recent cleaning,
which has revealed some extraordinary original polychromy on and around the
keystones/bosses:

there's simply nothing like this, anywhere on The Innernets.
almost as good as Being There.
almost.
