medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I tried this on MEDIEV-L, but there were no takers. Thoughts, anyone?
Does anyone have any views on the Third Recension of the English
Coronation Ordo? Everyone seems to agree that it is "circa 1100", but
William Rufus died (very) suddenly, Henry had himself crowned three days
later, Anselm was in exile, and even Thomas of Bayeux didn't make it to
the ceremony. The coronation had to be performed by the Bishop of
London. There was no time to prepare a new ordo for this coronation, and
in the circumstances it doesn't look as if one would have been prepared
in advance. Could Lanfranc have prepared it for William Rufus's coronation?
