medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Revd Gordon Plumb <[log in to unmask]>
> What is interesting is that the composition appears, from Schiller's
comments, to have been drastically adapted in the 12thC. if, and when, it was
moved from the Crypt. Like others
some.
not Jim or M. Briggs, apparently.
>I find it difficult to envisage that the 12thC. actually had the technical
means to move a mosaic of this kind. What
interests me, as well, is how do we know of the mosaic in the crypt, and what
evidence is there for its former (pre-crucifixion) state? Is there
documentation?
would seem to be, given the absolute date that Schiller mentions --though it
*might* be a date for the building itself, not for the allegéd "moving" of
the mosaic from below to above ground.
>- this is way out of my area.
mine, too.
12th c. northern France is a long, long way from 12th c. Rome.
even farther than Southern Indiana, in some respects.
i just find the idea that a quite large mosaic was "moved" the 1120s to be
astonishing.
>Can those with knowledge of the early San Clemente and the surviving
documentation throw any light on these questions?

should have something on the subject.
