medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Peter Binkley <[log in to unmask]>
> I had this book in my hands last night, having picked it off the new-book
cart, but returned it this morning. I'm sure it would help with this question,
it's very thorough.

Hooke, Della. Trees in Anglo-Saxon England: literature, lore and landscape.
Woodbridge, Boydell, 2010.
vii, 310 p. : ill. ; 25 cm.
Series: Anglo-Saxon studies.
my pathetic on-line lieberry catalog doesn't show it (yet), but we do
subscribe to the series, so perhaps it will appear sometime in this
millennium.
Hooke appears to be an A-S scholar who is well founded in documentary work.
Ch. 1 Trees and groves in pre-Christian belief
Ch. 2 Christianity and the sacred tree
probably not a Follower of Bobby Graves, i should suspect.
Ch. 6 The use of Anglo-Saxon woodland: place-names and charter evidence
Ch 11 Other trees noted in charters and early place-names
i was surprised to find that a few trees are actually mentioned as boundary
markers in some A-S property charters.
Ch 12 Trees not readily apparent in the early medieval written record
that could be a fairly open-ended topic, i should think.
