medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
the use of trees as boundary markers is, apparently, not at all uncommon in
A-S charters.
i know of no analogous French use of them for that purpose --certainly not in
the 11th-13th c. charters from the Chartrain/Parisian region.
an occasional "via publica," rivers, other adjacent property, sometimes
(later) specifically-placed boundary stones (bornes), yes, but "unsubstantial"
trees, never, to my knowledge.
there is a somewhat famous charter (among those from St. Martin-des-Champs, i
believe) which defines a road right-of-way as being "as wide as the knight
Paganus can make it with his outspread arms as he rides down it."
which might seem a temporary enough criteria, i suppose.
