If only those pesky library users would stop asking for what they
want, & accept what librarians and councillors want!
What business thrives by ignoring its core customers?
John Dolan has shown more sense than many about consulting library
users, so I am surprised to see this attitude.

Obviously a library service is more than a library building.
But all the up-to-the-minute talk of local priorities, community
hubs, social value, etc etc - and research, especially
what John quotes below - assume a BUILDING. That's a building one can
get to, without loading 3 kids & a push-chair
on to two buses to get to the shiny mega-libe in the town centre.

I was reluctantly obliged to become a library campaigner about 12
years ago. My LA announced a brilliant plan to close ALL the local
libraries, in one of the most deprived inner-city boroughs in the
country, & concentrate resources on a handful of super-libes.
They flatly refused even to discuss this with mere locals.
When the Public Library Standards came out, our assessment of the
plan was proved right.
Long story short - in a final compromise, locals agreed to 2 closures
on condition a 'library facility' would replace each.
Ten years later, there is no sign of either.

Local people have much longer memories than ambitious staff or
councillors (that's why they are such a useful resource).
So if they get stroppy (as currently in Lewisham) there is almost
invariably a story behind it.
