Dear All,
There are still some places left for the free conference Starting Conversations...part of the Build the Truce project about conflict resolution run by the Imperial War Museum.
The conference is on Saturday 6 November from 10 until 4, it's free, refreshments, lunch and travel expenses of up to £50 are offered to all participants.
The conference aims to look at the reasons behind and practicalities in starting the conversations that lead to meaningful discussion in difficult situations and to put this in a historic and contemporary context.
It is aimed at all educators and other professionals who wish to extend their knowledge and experience of conflict resolution, as well as thinking about some practical ideas of how to deal with this in an education contest. All are welcome to attend.
Speakers include:
James Fergusson - journalist and author of A Million Bullets: the real story of the British Army in Afghanistan and Taliban: the true story. He has spent a lot of time in Afghanistan both with members of the armed forces and the Taliban and will talk about these experiences and how they relate to the ongoing conflict there. James was also the press spokesman for the Office of the High Representative, the body charged with implementing the Dayton Peace Accord which ended the civil war in Bosnia in 1995.
Lea Misan, director of Act for Change, an organisation working with young people to relate the historic narratives of the Holcaust and other genocides to the social reality and experiences of living in today's society.
Grant Rogers, Informal Learning Manager at IWM London, who as worked with the public on starting conversations prompted by the installation Baghdad, 5 March 2007 by the artist Jeremy Deller, currently on show at IWM London. This art installation is the remains of a car bomb which exploded in Baghdad and has been used by the Museum to reflect on conflict and the realities of war.
Professor Mervyn Frost, Head of the Department of War Studies, King's College, London. His academic specialism resides in conflict resolution. He is also South African and has been involved for many years in looking particuarly at conflict resolution there.
Dr Kyoko Murakami, University of Bath, whose work with former Far East Prisoners of War in travelling back to the places where they were held, gives a different take on conflict resolution and starting conversations that ultimately result in the end of a conflict for individuals, even though their physical involvement in that conflict ended many years before.
The conference is free, lunch and refreshments are provided as well as travel expenses of up to £50. Places are booking fast, so please get in touch if you would like to attend.
To ask further questions or to book a place, please contact me direct. Please also feel free to circulate to others who you think might be interested.
