If anyone is interested I can send a copy of the Schools4Museums Database report which looks at the participation by SE schools for the school year 2008/9. It also examines the trends since the start of data collection in 2004.
Here is a brief extract re figures:
Over the period 2004-2009 South East primary school participation has reduced by 6.2%, from 63.2% (1,776) to 57% (1,622).
3.7 Although this appears a significant decline, it should be viewed in the context of:
* the impact of the recession upon families and their ability to fund school trips
* the changes in ways museums work with schools - often undertaking greater depth of engagement with fewer schools
* a shift in emphasis where public sector museums are now providing more informal learning opportunities to all parts of their local communities, rather than focussing on the schools.
Best wishes

Subject: surprising school figures for 2009-2010 academic year
Dear GEM colleagues,
Have you experienced any particularly surprising dips in your school visit numbers this year?
I am compiling my annual report and although overall our school figures are up this academic year there are a few months where there has been a significant drop in school visits for no apparent reason (October '09, March, May and June '10). As you see, they don't even relate to the 'Big Freeze' in January.
I have looked on the GEM archive and cannot see any similar discussions since last year so any feedback or theories would be very welcome indeed, surely the election would not have made such an impact....or could it?
If you would like the collated responses please let me know on an email at my address below.
Thank you!
Helen
