Hi Louise,
I have been a volunteer with the National Trust for 2 and 1/2 years now and the scheme they run for volunteers is rather good. It is at the discretion of the individual property but generally speaking, volunteers who give 50 hours or more of their time are entitled to a volunteer card. This card enables them to enter any National Trust property for free. If they are already a Trust member, the card can then be used to allow access to an accompanying friend. Alongside this, the card allows 10% discount on both food/drink and all retail goods.
I am unsure of any other schemes that allow volunteers to visit museums for free. Where I am currently based, guest tickets are made available to volunteers on request. There is no limit to the amount of tickets (although if you were to ask for 20 I am sure something would be said) and no required amount of hours needed before the tickets are issued.
Not sure whether this helps or not really but it possibly clarifies the NT vols situation.
Sue
