medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Madeleine,
This is only academic information, I'm afraid, but Nicholas Orme
refers to the boy-bishop's festival in his "Medieval Children", pp.
188-189 and 232-233. His examples come from late medieval Exeter,
London, and Salisbury, as well as the Sarum rite (Registrum Statutorum
et Consuetudinum Ecclesiae Cathedralis Sancti Pauli Londinensis,
Simpson ed.; Lives of the Bishops of Exeter, G. Oliver; Breviarum ad
usum Sarum, Procter ed.; The Hereford Breviary, Frere and Brown ed,;
Ordinale Exon, Dalton ed.).
I think I saw similar references also in Sulamith Shahar's "Childhood
in the Middle Ages".
As for a great story of boys acting as religious leaders, if not
bishops, Alberic of Troisfointaine's half-fictional version of the
"Children's crusade" is an interesting text.
Best wishes,
Sini
