Hi Anne,
We started a club for Trowbridge Museum at the end of last year, together with a new series of paid Saturday workshops. We called it Stumpy's Club (after a stuffed sheep in the museum). I did some research during last year's summer activities into Saturday workshops and whether or not people would be interested in a membership club, and also whether or not and how much they would be prepared to pay. The general feeling was the Saturday workshops would be popular, and enough said they would be keen to sign up their children.
We haven't specified an age range but one of the aims of the Saturday workshops was to offer more tailored workshops for different age ranges, enabling us to do more interesting and longer sessions. Our Saturday
We have set the annual joining fee at £5 for 1 child, £8 for two and £11 for three, and offer discounts on the workshops (usually 50p) and some free sessions. We've also done joining packs with membership cards, badges and free gifts and we are sending out regular newsletters with puzzles (where's Stumpy?), practical ideas, and pieces on history. We are also offering them a Stumpy Club branded cap, t-shirt or eco-bag. We'll also run some competitions and club only workshops eventually. Over the year they should receive more than the cost in discounts and gifts. We also send out birthday cards to each member.
I don't really know how many I expected to join up, but have 31 so far. It's a steady grower I think. Strangely, a number people have joined but not being to any workshops.
I think the big test will be when we get them to renew their membership the second year - how many will do so?
Hope this proves useful,
Regards,
David Birks

Subject: Museum Clubs
Hello All
In a quest to please all the people all the time, or at least as many as I possibly can, I'm looking into provision of museum clubs for children. If you run a museum club or clubs, what ages do you cover? Do you have separate older and younger groups and if so what are the cut off ages? Any tips or advice on what does and doesn't work would be very gratefully received.
Many thanks and Happy Thursday.
Best wishes.
