Just a note to anyone thinking of designing a coat of arms - it's a good
idea to look up the rules of heraldry first. The rules are quite simple, but
if you're not familiar with them, it's very easy to dream up a design which
is heraldically wrong. I see it all the time at "medieval" events -
especially glaring breaches of the Rule of Tincture, which only the City of
Jerusalem is allowed to break.

The V&A online generator is a great introduction. It produces legitimate
designs, and it even generates the blazon (the formal verbal description,
which is what you actually get granted if you apply for a grant of arms).
But it only produces a small subset of possible designs, so it does rather
limit one's options.
