medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I realise all that, Jim, but friends of mine, who collect Russian eggs with icons or other, more secular, paintings on them, have told me long ago that the saints portrayed and their combinations within a composition, like this supposed tabernacle door, say something about the period (and/or area) it was made in. IMO this means that a knowledgeable person could perhaps say if this was really a medieval find. Of course the details can only be studied on the real thing, but (and I don't know if this compares to the study of icons) I can discern from a photograph in which period a miniature is painted, and, if it’s not done too well, if it's real or not. I thought maybe icon specialists (are there really no such persons on this list?) could do the same.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Well, Henk, anyone with that sort of expertise would certainly not
venture any sort of pronouncement based on a photograph, rather than the
work itself, let alone a photograph that does not actually show the work
to its full advantage. It is "icon-like" and could be either Byzantine
(or otherwise Orthodox) or Crusader (the Crusaders produced icons
strongly inspired by Byzantine ones, largely it is thought in Acre).
Unless someone can find a better image of it, though, it is impossible
to judge either the style or the subject matter of the work even
approximately.
Cheers,
Jim
