impossible to say much, of course, from that not-overly-detailed pic, but
there's nothing immediately obvious to suggest that the artifact is not (at
least) consistent with an ancient one --700-1200? sure, why not?
From: Pat Cullum <[log in to unmask]>
>As far as I could see, from not very good reproductions, it looked to be
Byzantine/Orthodox in style, about which I have no expertise.... To my
untutored eye Orthodox style does not change much over time,
would that the intricate history of "Byzantine" style were that simple, Pat,
just a matter (like the history of Western Art) of Progress, Onward and Upward
forever, into our own Benighted Epoch.
among other factors, before the Catastrophe of 1204 it appears that there was
something of a great "oscillation" within Byzantine style, between a kind of
residual "Hellenism" (generally associated, rightly or wrongly, with
"naturalism") and... what should we call it?
to say "Medievalism" is to complete a circularity.
to call the periods of (supposed) "Hellenistic" dominance" "Renaissances" is
to risk an anachronistic value judgment of the first order.
From: Dr Jim Bugslag <[log in to unmask]>
>It is "icon-like" and could be either Byzantine (or otherwise Orthodox) or
Crusader (the Crusaders produced icons strongly inspired by Byzantine ones,
largely it is thought in Acre).
do you have at hand a short bibliography of the discussion of this curious
phenomenon, Jim?
> Unless someone can find a better image of it, though, it is impossible to
judge either the style or the subject matter of the work even approximately.
agreed.
