Platt Hall Global Threads Co-ordinator (Stories of the World)
Freelance contract
Are you passionate about museum and gallery collections? Can you inspire
young people aged 15-21? If you have creative inspiration, fresh
perspectives and enough self-knowledge to enable young people to take the
lead, then this project may be for you.
Global Threads is a programme of innovative and dynamic exhibitions and
events that will take place during 2010-12, developed by young people
working with museum collections, curators and artists. Focusing on the
history and legacy of the cotton industry, it will tell a compelling story
of the past, present and future of the north west and its place in the
world, through the region’s outstanding collections of textiles and textiles
heritage. This partnership project is the region’s response to Stories of
the World, a national initiative that forms part of the Cultural Olympiad in
the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games. It will provide a radical new look at
museum collections, placing young people centre stage as interpreters of
culture.
Manchester City Galleries is looking for a co-ordinator to lead its Global
Threads programme, working with the unique costume and photography
collections at Platt Hall Gallery of Costume. You will lead a group of young
people in exploring the collections at Platt Hall and devising
interpretation and displays that respond to the Global Threads theme,
through a programme of workshops and events over a period of 15 months from
January 2010 to March 2011.
We are looking for someone who can inspire and engage young people with
museum collections, work both as part of the wider gallery team and
independently when necessary, to develop new perspectives on our cultural
heritage.
The fee for this project is £15,000 for a minimum of 100 days work to be
timetabled over the 15 month duration of the project.
The closing date for applications is Monday 2 November. For further details,
a brief and person specification, please contact Gillian Michaels at
Manchester Art Gallery, on [log in to unmask] , 0161 235 8826.
