Dear All
I think that bearing in mind this post was posted on GEM on Monday and closed on Wednesday that I would also be concerned that, if you are talking about including working people, you could be in real danger of missing not only those who are on holiday but equally those whose busy jobs, etc would make it difficult to complete a considered application to a high standard in such a short period of time. Not even to get into the whole issue of whether it might take longer to complete an application form for people with certain disabilities.
I also agree with Peter and Jim that it is a shame/missed opportunity for the organisation to not have the same range of applicants that they might get if they were to keep the post open for at least a standard week. Just because someone has managed to put together an application in a short period of time doesn't necessarily mean that they are the best candidate for the post - they might be - but equally you might be missing the perfect person. Having said all this it is pretty amazing the high volume of applications in the short period of time and this speaks volumes about the current job situation for many people.

Dear Neil and all, yes I was very impressed that this had been checked and acceptable to various policies. Speaking to professionals in other fields they are also watching with interest because such a policy would make their job applications a lot easier. Personally I can totally understand the procedure but do not agree with it, and how sad the perfect person for the post who was on holiday has just missed applying.
