Three suggestions :
1) A wig stand, with the base broken off (or sawn off to re-use it for other
purposes). It's a bit heavy for this, though.
2) A large pestle. Since the head is wood, it wouldn't be suitable for hard
materials, but it might be used, in conjunction with a big wooden bowl, for
something like cracking barley prior to mashing.
3) It COULD be an unusually large carver's mallet, although the apparent
absence of impact marks suggests otherwise.
