Don, I have the same problem with some of the contributors on PhD Design. I
have sometimes got in trouble in discussion's in the past on this list when
I have suggested that if you can't reference something then it is not
considered a valid idea or with discussions that become too theoretical and
seem to lose their grip on the physical world. I understand referencing is
good but in design practice referencing other designer's work is frowned
upon if their is no critical thinking or problem solved or progress beyond
the reference to an existing design. If discussions become too theoretical
they can get lost in an open sea without an anchor. I think design research
should have some sort of anchor (even remote) in the physical world of
applied design to differentiate the field from research that is purely
exploratory.
I know many will disagree. My research thinking is driven by design practice
but some discussions are hard to reconcile as being related in any way to
design practice.I guess there is value in diversity of viewpoints but
sometimes I think a perspective of design practice is under represented in
discussions.
