I've just found my copy of "Derbyshire Lead Mining Glossary" by Nellie Kirkham (Cave Research Group Publication Number 2 - 1949) which she kindly gave to me. On the second page (not numbered) is a illustrated drawing of a Drawing-Stowe with all it's pieces labelled i.e. the Sole-tree, the Stowe-blades, the Hang-benches and the Spindle: Turn-tree. Howard - would you like me to scan and email you this drawing also?
Mining Definitions from Nellie's Glossary:-
STOWES:
1: Drawing stowes, or windlass.
2: The stowes of possession. A small model stowes
(a) In the Low Peak, made of seven pieces of wood. (see SOLE-TREES, HANG-BENCHES, STOWE-BLADES and SPINDLE),
(b) In the High Peak, the above and four more. (see YOKINGS).
Spelt STOW, STOCE, STOCES, STOSES, STOWE, STOWES and STOWESESS indiscriminately. Tapping uses three forms in one sentence. (the same as DRAWING-TREE and TURN-TREE).
HANG-BENCH:- Two horizontal boards called Hang-benches were fixed across the sole-trees of the drawing-stowes. They were formerly nailed with wooden pins, iron being illegal.
SOLE-TREES:- Part of a stowe, horizontal pieces of flat wood.
SPINDLE:- A piece of wood that went between the stow-blades of stowes formerly nicked by the Barmaster.
STOWE-BLADES:- The two uprights which carry the turntree (also STOE-BLADES).
TURN-TREE:- 1: The Drawing stowes. (also TURN-BEAMS and TURN-DRAWERS). 2: The spindle of the drawing-stowe, with a handle at each end.
YOKINGS:- 1: Part of the possession stowes in the King's Field, four pieces of timber placed across the top of the shaft. 2: Wood joined together for propping in a mine. (also YOAKINGS).
The picture that I have mentioned in my earlier email, on the front of Stokes "Lead and Lead Mining, shews a stowe fixed to Yokings.
