Illustrated on the front of "Lead and Lead Mining in Derbyshire" by Arthur H. Stokes, F.G.S., Peak, District Mines Historical Society Special Publication No. 2, (1996 Edition) - From the original 1880-1883 publication in the Transactions of the Chesterfield and Derbyshire Institutue of Mining, Civil and Mechanical Engineers (ISBN 0 904334 09 0) is a very good drawing of a surface stowe with two miners winding up a kibble out of a shaft. As well as this edition I have Nellie Kirkham's personal copy of an earlier publication of the same (1973 edition) complete with her underlining (in red - she was very fond of using a green biro for writing letters) and notes. This also shews the same illustration (but smaller) of a stowe on the front of the publication. I have searched both books to find the origin of this picture but it appears none is given. The miners clothes seem to be eighteenth century to me, perhaps someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
Howard, if you can't get hold of a copy of this and are interested, I'll scan it and send it to you direct by email. Please let me know.
