Dear List
Man-Engines at Devon Great Consols
A late contribution re the above:
In the Kinnaird Report into the condition of mines, 1864, Thomas Morris of Devon Great Consols gave evidence on 26th May 1863, and was questioned extensively about the means the men were using to ascend and descend into the mine, among other things. Asked if they were intending to install a Man-Engine he said:
‘At the 212 fathoms it has been a query with us whether we should abandon it, till lately; but the prospects are now so good that the probability is we shall put a man-engine down there, and a perpendicular shaft and a steam engine’

Phil
