The great Eric Partridge in Usage and Abusage (surely you all have a
copy to hand) says "Be careful with replica, which might well be
restricted to its use as an art term; and, as an art term, is properly '
a copy, duplicate or reproduction . . . made' - not by another but - 'by
the original artist." Alas, on the subject of facsimile he is silent.
H W Fowler in Modern English usage also emphasises that 'properly' a
replica means made by the original artist and adds, with just a whiff of
English superiority 'it is this proper sense that alone makes the
foreign word replica worth maintaining in English by the side of the
abundant English words for copies or duplicates.'
Chambers Dictionary has facsimile as 'an exact copy, as of handwriting,
a coin etc.' For replica 'a duplicate, properly one by the original
artist: a facsimile' which is no help at all other than to indicate that
the two words are, generally, interchangeable.
Personally, I favour simulacrum
