I'm in general agreement that the list should be kept open. I do consider my
replies carefully. If someone's asked for something very specific, I'll
reply to the questioner. If it's likely to be of general interest, even
peripherally, I reply to the group. Occasionally, I'll compose separate
replies. I concur with Tehmina - if the replies to questions all went
off-list, we'd end up with a list of questions, but no answers.
The GoogleMail (and WordPress) approach, with threaded discussions listed by
topic, helps to keep big lists in order, but it actually reduces the chance
of serendipity. Flashes of inspiration often come to me from a casual glance
at an answer to a question that initially appeared irrelevant to my
interests. I'm happy to do a quick manual zap of job offers from Edinburgh
if I can retain the valuable insights this list gives me into the museum
world.
