Just to set the record straight - as a teacher who has worked in both
Primary and Secondary and as a supply teacher and TA, it works like this:
Secondary schools have lower staff-student ratios but can't rely on having
parents come along with school groups to make up the numbers, they rely on
having enough paid members of staff. If you are a secondary teacher you
would normally teach classes that are not going on the trip during the day
that you are out, these classes have to be covered. Also, those classes
taught by teachers who have to be there for the teacher:student ratio have
to be covered as well. Even though schools will try to arrange this among
their staff by using up teachers' free periods when they would usually be
marking or preparing lessons, they will find that they can't manage a whole
day like this. I have often been called in to cover for half a day because
of trips.
Primary schools are in an easier situation as the Class teacher will usually
have at least one paid TA to call on plus parent helpers/volunteers so no
extra staff will be needed dfrom the school and supply cover isn't an issue.
However they may need to call in P/T staff on their days off to have
sufficient for the trip. Once again I have been that TA who had to give up
my day off to go to the Pantomime with Y5&6 ("Oh yes I did....")much as I
love working in schools, it does mean I'm not sitting in my attic making
stuff so I do need to be paid for my work with the kids.
This is before you get into the minefield of parental contributions towards
the cost of trips. These have to be voluntary and it really does vary
depending on the culture of the school whether parents do make an effort to
pay up, then there's the coaches (discussed recently on the list) and it's a
miracle that any secondary schools manage to visit museums and galleries at
all.

They DON'T have to buy in supply staff when teacher's are released for a
day? But lack of cover is always one of the exscuses they give for not
participating in museum education events, or not turning up at all, having
booked!?!

Dear all
Thanks for all the people at work before 9.00 who shared this information
with me!
For anyone else wondering, the common LEA figure seems to be £150 per day,
although the cost to the school is higher. Might be best to budget £200 but
schools may well accept less as they don't always have to buy in a supply
teacher for a full day (or at all) when they release staff.
Thanks again
Jo
