Brighton's On the Pull
Brighton Museum & Art Gallery

A free Study Day to explore how we've worked with audiences to inform our DCF-funded 'hidden histories' project
Aims of the Study Day
We aim to
* introduce the model developed for On the Pull, including the use of focus groups and research bursaries
* explore how the project has responded to the challenges of developing fresh perspectives on the Designated collections through new research and displays, web content and public programmes to engage new audiences
* present a case study of using Inspiring Learning For All (ILFA) in developing, managing and evaluating a museum project
* communicate the summative evaluation carried out with visitors, focus groups and staff
* discuss how institutions can embed new approaches from such projects into policy and practice

Brighton's On the Pull
Brighton Museum & Art Gallery
Tuesday 29 July 2008
Background
On the Pull has taken the themes of courtship and attraction to create a series of new displays uncovering stories about our objects using Brighton & Hove Museums' three Designated collections of Natural History, World Art and Decorative Art, as well as our Fashion, Fine Art, Local History, Toys, Media and Film collections.
In the production of these we asked target audience focus groups what they'd like to see in the displays and around the museum. We also handed over the collections research to six researcher/interpreters who gave fresh and creative responses to our collections through music, film and writing.
On the Pull took over the museum from 14 February to 31 August 2008. Along with the new displays, there's a chill out area, interactives and a programme of lively events.
Our findings from working with audience focus groups have informed not only new research on the Designated collections but also influenced our approach for On the Pull to
* interpretation and presentation
* marketing and print
* the use of volunteer gallery interpreters, and
* events programming
Our findings also impacted on the re-design of Brighton Museum's entrance area, which was carried out just before On the Pull opened.
On the Pull is funded by Brighton & Hove City Council though Brighton & Hove Museums, the Designation Challenge Fund (DCF) and Renaissance in the Regions, with support from the James Green Charitable Trust.
