Dear GEM list,
Apologies for the tardiness of this reply, GEM was being diverted into
my junk folder, something which rest assured says nothing about what I
view as the quality of this list!
Further to Heather's email, which mentioned Shape the Future as a guide
for teachers covering engineering activities, the Royal Institution, the
BA and UWE have been named as 'preferred suppliers' by the DCSF to
produce directories of all the science and maths activities available to
schools (basically, extending the good work done on Shape the Future).
This will include anything that covers science or maths topics in a way
that enhances or enriches students' experience above and beyond the
National Curriculum. I'm afraid that as the project is only just
starting, we don't have any web pages for you to find out any more
information yet. If you are interested in knowing more though, please do
contact me off-list.
We will also be asking anyone and everyone to submit information about
their own activities, and will have a web form for this purpose. I will
be posting this on the GEM list when it is up and running, and would
encourage everyone that covers science as part of their activities to
fill it in. The directories (we hope!) will be widely used by teachers
in the coming years to plan their science and maths teaching, so only
good news for you!
More to follow in the next month...

Subject: Response to Science Initiatives
Dear All,
I posted a question a few weeks ago about which government initiatives
in science were current. I've compiled the responses which I recieved -
see attached. I hope they are useful for everyone who asked for the
outcome of the question.
Many thanks,
Heather Hollins,
