> Many thanks for answer and suggestions. Indeed 12th century is a 'classic'
period of friendships of bishops and Cistercians, appointments of Cistercian
monks to the episcopal positions etc. so, no surprise that most literature
focuses on that period.
yes, it definitely seemed to have been a deliberate policy, esp. of St. Bernie
and, presumably, of the Cistercian Popes.
>BUT Cistercian monks continued to be appointed as bishops (interesting
examples from Scotland and Scandinavia), but their significance seems to be
different.
i know nothing about it, but Cistercians as bishops in these "new" areas would
go along with the role of new Cistercian abbatial foundations in the
"colonization" of them.
> The article by McGuire 'Monastic and Episcopal Biography in the Thirteenth
Century' is in vol. 39 of Analecta Cisterciensia. It is ostensibly about one
case - that of Bp Gunner of Viborg, but it makes much broader comparison with
Cistercian historiography and hagiography and since it is a 13th c. it is a
very different context than a century ago. Have a look at this article. Very
well argued.
alas, we've got a good run of _Citeaux_ here, but not the A.C.
but, as i said, that's pretty far afield for me, both chronologically and
spatially.
thanks for the ref., though.
