medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
According to R.G. Davies' essay in the ODNB, Bottlesham probably came from
Bottisham in Cambridgeshire. He was appointed bishop of Nantes in 1380, and
by 1383 he had graduated up from titular bishop of Nantes to titular bishop
of Bethlehem, although there doesn't seem to be any evidence of when or how
this happened. In 1385, he was appointed bishop of Llandaff by papal
provision, perhaps by virtue of service to Urban VI during the siege of
Nocera. His provision to Rochester in 1389 was part of a complicated series
of maneuverings around that office. In later life he seems to have been
quite respected for integrity and non-partisanship.
