Hello,
We've recently established a group of staff who will be responsible for co-ordinating how we provide an accessible and inclusive service. The first three key issues that we are looking at are:
* carrying out access audits across our sites and services (physical & intellectual in the first instance)
* information gathering, i.e. from our users and non-users - we want to join this up and make it more strategic - some impact assessments have clearly shown that we need more information.
* developing a policy, strategy and action plan - linking in with the wider local authority policy and strategy
What I wanted to ask was:
1. Does anyone from a local authority museum service have a recent access and inclusion (or learning and access - however you have chosen to do it) policy or strategy document that they would be prepared to share? We are interested in how people are structuring these documents and how they are linking to wider LA policy.
2. Thinking about users in the first instance, would you be prepared to share how you gather information from your users about themselves - specifically relating to access and inclusion, e.g. where from, whether they consider themselves to have any disabilities, their gender and ethnic background. If you have chosen not to collect certain information, it would be useful to hear about this as well. Do you gather information all the time, or in relation to specific projects and exhibitions - do you vary the information you collect according to what you want to know at any particular time? Do you gather information from every visitor?
In relation to users: At the moment we include the following methods of collecting data amongst others:
* have evaluation forms at events (which we actively hand-out)
* carry out 1 survey a year at all of our sites
* capture postcode information from families by offering prizes for trails during holiday periods
* take information from those sites with an entry charge, where people have come in on a discounted entry
* last year we captured post-code information from all visitors to the D-Day Museum over a specific period of time
Thanks in advance for any replies.
