Dear GEM List
I am a PhD research student in the Department of Museum Studies at the
University of Leicester and I am interested in looking at how 'living
history' techniques impact on how young people (of Key stage 3 and above)
learn about and understand Medieval history. I am taking 'living history'
to be quite a broad concept e.g. any attempt to bring the past to life in
the present using, for example, museum educators dressed in character,
actors, volunteers or re-enactors who might be hired by a museum or
historic sites, from individual characters to whole communities. I am
interested in how these techniques help young people to (potentially)
understand historical periods in more depth, and to develop their
understanding of historical concepts as well as historical content,
particularly for the Medieval period which can be a challenging period in
history, although popular myths and legends are still prominent in the
popular imagination such as King Arthur, Robin Hood and the Black Death.
As part of my research, I am looking for museums and historic sites which
could potentially act as case studies. I am also interested in talking to
other people with an interest in this area. If you would like more
information about my research or can help in any way then please do get in
touch with me as I would really like to hear from you. I can be contacted

I very much look forward to hearing from you,
Best wishes
