In case people are wondering whether to upgrade to Leopard on their
Macs, you might want to take the following into account, until such
time as Apple fix the problems:
The X11 window system bundled with Leopard is fairly broken - Apple
have changed it a lot and introduced some serious bugs. The effect on
FSL that we have seen so far is:
- The FSL GUIs (e.g. FEAT) are considerably slower, which isn't a
very real problem, unless possibly you are setting up huge numbers of
EVs and/or contrasts, in which case it would probably be very very
slow indeed.
- More seriously, running remote programs over X - for example,
running FSLView on another machine and displaying it on the Mac, has
various problems - for example, it's quite slow, and some text lists
(like the overlay list, or the file selector when opening files) don't
display correctly.
- X11 windows don't interact correctly with Spaces (the multi-desktop
switcher).
Apart from this, it's nice....and wrt to actually _running_ FSL
programs, only 5% slower than the previous operating system....that's
progress for you.....
Cheers.
