Dear Gem Digest
Please would you kindly remove me from your email list. I just find I can't keep up with all the information! Best wishes and thanks

Thanks Martin for such a detailed and (in the last line at least) =
accurate summary of the pros and cons of my suggestion.
=20
You identify the NIACE lists as important. I agree. Sorry that my =
initial e-mail was not explicit but I want to use NIACE's lists as a way =
forward (probably creating a new one "Learning in Cultural contexts" or =
some such name) as i think it is crucial to engage the adult learning =
provider sector as well as the museum (galleries etc) sector too.
=20
So, watch this space....
=20
Cheers

=20
PS Thanks to all who e-mailed back their support for such a list/forum. =
I will give this more thought and let you know what happens. So, watch =
this sp.... oh, I've already said that. sorry!

Subject: Re: Discussing Adult Learning in Museums

Hi Essex and all

Discussing Adult Learning in Museums
Technically speaking, it is pretty straightforward setting up a new =
discussion list by following instructions at www.jiscmail.ac.uk =
<http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/> , provided certain conditions are met, =
mainly relating to the status of the initiating organisation. =20
This is how the GEM list was formed around 10 years ago, and it now has =
over 1000 subscribers. Managing a list is also relatively undemanding =
and takes around an hour a month (less initially, as you have no =
subscribers...)

Making the list 'take off' is rather harder to achieve. The majority of =
online forums fail to generate the critical mass of contributions needed =
to sustain dialogue and interest among users, and simply wither away. =
Current best practice for museums and others seeking to engage new =
audiences is to tap into discussions within their preferred channels, =
rather than creating new, isolated, empty forums. =20

So unless you are aiming to create a new entity or brand, I would have =
thought it would be better to do your talking where the people are =
already i.e. on the GEM list and on relevant, mature lists in HE and FE, =
including the 12 lists already available via NIACE:
http://www.niace.org.uk/information/Forms/ListSubscribe.asp =20

A blog or wiki might be more appropriate if the aim is to build up a =
resource of useful comments, links to articles, etc - but that would =
require major commitment to moderation, editing, dealing with technical =
issues etc - which is a role or set of roles requiring significant =
expertise and experience. Of course there is also Facebook to =
consider, along with lots of other potential platforms. =20

It is already difficult to keep in touch with all the channels =
supporting similar threads of discussion. Many people who sit next to =
each other in an organisation or 'opposite' each other in related =
organisations are unaware of discussions that would be relevant to them =
and are continually reinventing the wheel or missing out on important =
social capital, simply because they don't know about or can't be =
bothered to subscribe to or check in on all the relevant lists or =
forums. =20

So if the aim is simply to facilitate online dialogue about topics =
relating to Adult Learning in Museums, I reckon it is a no-brainer to =
use existing lists. =20
Rather than having to make people join your new list one by one, and =
then each remember to suspend mail and sign up again after going on =
holiday (as well as all the other lists they are on) and deal with all =
the changes in email addresses etc etc... simply initiate new dialogues =
with those interested among the 1113 active, intelligent, articulate, =
considerate ...(I would go on but can sense you blushing) users already =
subscribed to the GEM list. =20

I am able to establish a discussion forum on the general theme of Adult =

the adult learning provider sector too (HE, FE, Comm Ed etc) so would be =

At this stage all I want to get an idea of is how many Gemmers would =

Hi all
=20
Thank you all for your constructive comments on my query re the =
desirability and practicality of an e-mail group for this area.
=20
Having taken all things into consideration I have decided to set up a =
list from the NIACE (England) website. Don't look yet, it's not there! =
Read on...
=20
I have to give the list a name. I am only looking to promote adult =
learning in museums at the moment (due to time constraints on my wider =
work). It may well be that, in the future, NIACE will actively seek to =
promote adult learning in a wider variety of cultural venues/situations =
(theatres, built environment, national parks etc etc).
=20
I'm thinking, therefore, of calling the list "Adult Learning in Culture" =
or "Adult Learning in Cultural Contexts".
=20
I'd welcome feedback and/or other suggestions.
=20
Viva la democracy!
=20
Cheers

Me again...
=20
We have just had a request from Government for a brief summary of how =
the FE sector contributes to social cohesion. If you are/have recently =
been involved in any LSC-funded work in museums can you please let me =
know with a few lines description?
=20
For example: Imperial War Museum North's Volunteer Programme. HLF-funded =
but the training for volunteers has been added to by LSC-funded basic =
skills tutors.
=20
Sorry for urgency, but it has just landed in our laps today and a =
response is required by Thursday. Politicians eh!?

dates for timelines. Sorry I haven't replied to you all personally. =20

Lisa.

Hi Lisa

I bought some world timelines for the loan boxes when I was at Haslemere =
Museum. I think they came from GLS - or it could have been Hope or NES =
Arnold. It might be worth trying to find them on their website if only =
to look at which dates they thought were important!

They may get in touch with you anyway, but I remember the British =
Library=20
having an excellent timeline placing Britain's key events within those =
of=20
World history - it was for the Lindisfarne gospels exhibition, so was=20
focussed on the Anglo-Saxon era.
Also, English Heritage have a good one that places things like the =
extinction=20
of dinosaurs way before people evolved, as well as key historic dates in =

context. That one is for English History only though.

Hope this helps,
Claire Tall

Hi=20

we ordered a history timeline from pcet wall charts (pictorial charts =
educational trust)
its good because it highlights world history and certain events that =
happened. and covers the world.=20

Hi Lisa

I'm working on developing a timeline (30m) of Liverpool's history pre =
ice=20
age to present. We are currently consulting locally with public and with =
a=20
load of curators and academics about what they think the 5 key dates =
from=20
Liverpool's history are.... In terms of national and international we=20
thought we might use the national curriculum references - Vikings and =
Romans=20
arrival, Victorians, Pyramids built etc to give people a point of=20
reference - what was happening in Liverpool during the Aztecs? etc.

Only problem with that is that it does present quite an imperial view of =

history which we all try to avoid so would need to flag it up as 'text =
book=20
history' or something - with a teacher with a mortar board. Our main=20
emphasis though, is the local stuff - that is just a point of reference.
We are incorporating objects into ours and also trying to think how we =
can=20
make it accessible for children - icons etc.

I'll copy you in when we've collated our key dates in case useful.

Julia (at National Museums Liverpool)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------=
--------------------

The National Maritime Museum digital team is currently producing an
interactive timeline which aims to show different events (historical,
cultural etc) side by side. IF you're interested, I can send you a link
once it's all finished (there were apparently a few stumbling blocks in
the initial stages - it's a complicated project!!!)
Good luck,
Amy

-------------------------------------------------------------------------=
---------------------------

Hi Lisa

Good luck with that. You will open a can of worms I'm afraid. We have =
one=20
in Jane Austen's House which is very popular with the visitors, but =
because=20
I had the temerity to include random events (from the BBC History =
website)=20
like the Peterloo Massacre I was accused of trying to make a political=20
message (by only one influential person it has to be said)! I was=20
astonished. I can send you a copy of ours if you'd like, but obviously =
ours=20
was only covering 41 years and not 2000.

Kind regards

Louise West

Subject: Professional Development Opportunity with the Imperial War Museum

Dear All,

Re: InSite: 20th century conflict for 21st century learning

Their Past Your Future, with the Imperial War Museum, launches a new, all=
=20
expenses paid, continuing professional develoment opportunity for=20
teachers, museum, library and archive educators and education=20
professionals today. Details of the programme, itinerary, testimony from=
=20
those who took part in the pilot and how to apply can be found at=20
www.theirpast-yourfuture.org.uk/InSite. The deadline for applications in=
=20
22 February 2008.=20=20

InSite will focus on the impact of conflict in the twentieth century with=
=20
an emphasis on Post-1945 Europe and the Cold War. As well as subject=20
knowledge, it aims to build awareness of the issues involved in the=20
teaching of controversial and sensitive subjects, and confidence in the=20=

delivery of these subjects. It also aims to facilitate mutual learning=20=

exchanges between teachers and other educators. In addition, there is an=20=

element of training in risk assessment, health and safety, itinerary=20
planning and other practical issues that arise from leading educational=20=

trips.

This is a great opportunity so please consider it yourself and/or pass on=
=20
to anyone school or museums, libraries and archives based or in other=20
education settings that might be interested.

If you have any questions then please contact me either direct or via=20

Subject: CASE STUDIES WANTED - FAMILY RESOURCES

Can anyone recommend - or has anyone recently developed - resources for=20=

families to use in museums and galleries?

This can be self-led or facilitated.

We are planning a GEMS Area Networking Day exploring this topic (early=20=

2008) and would like to include a range of case studies so if you can=20
suggest good examples of any of the following, please get in touch (off-=

list):

* family trails or quizzes
* Art Cart
* backpacks
* story sacks
* family boxes or similar handling material in galleries
* interactive zones

We welcome ideas that are inter-generational and also cater for sensory=20=

needs - and not necessarily confined to Scotland!

The Yorkshire region has done extensive work with trainee teachers
offering quality assured placements for them (assessed against the QTS
Standards) in museums and archives. You can contact Justine Reilly at
MLA Yorkshire for more information or your regional mla agency who will
have the relevant contacts.=20

=20

Creative Partnerships and MLA are taking this work forward on a national
basis by redeveloping the website that MLA Yorkshire produced a few
years ago which will provide support, guidance and tools for developing
and evaluating ITT placements. This website will be launched in November
and aims to bring together 'settings other than schools' (such as
museums) and teacher training providers (colleges, universities and
schools) in order to develop placements for trainee teachers outside the
classroom. I am not sure of the web address yet but it would be worth
contacting Caitlin Page at Creative Partnerships national office to get
the link in November. At the moment Creative Partnerships and MLA are
collating a list of potential partners to populate the database of
interested partners which will go on the website.

=20

Please feel free to contact me directly about this as I have been
involved in developments from inception=20
