The contrast is not between 'cognitive' and 'interpretive', but between a
theoretical approach and interpretive one. The last two can both be
cognitive, though the type of question and the direction of question will
differ. Theoretical cognitivist will ask e.g. what cognitive processes are
at the basis of some film devices or film constructions that are applied
across different films, while interpretive cognitivist will ask what is at
the basis of individual experience we have with particular film (or films by
particular filmmaker) etc. Obviously the distinction applies to the
phenomenologist theoretician and interpreter too.
