Hi Terry and others on the list
Of course design disciplines of many sorts currently are embedded in
different disciplinary combinations, which have their own effects on
design practice, knowledge and outcomes. As my own simple categorization
process is throwing up this is ideological territory and also a complex
area of knowledge and practice intersections (of course as a social
scientist of sorts these debates, provocations, and literatures are
precisely what I look for). A close look at institutions (and I've had a
cursory look at nearly 90 offering doctorates) shows complex and
sophisticated links to research areas, claims about social technical and
commercial 'scope, and so forth. A close look also at student projects
(details of which are often on sites and also available in some digital
collections shows further complex concentric circles radiating out from
individuals and design units. However, design in centres of innovation
or whatever or in knowledge management etc., does indicate something
about potential shifts in discourse and practice in institutions. I am
aware also of the institutional spread and amalgamation of design. It's
interesting if designers actually pursue this as it would in one way
help disappear the design discipline project before it got underway. I
wonder in fact whether designers, educators and current institutions
internationally really do see the future of design as a non-disciplinary
entity. Think, for example, of whether engineering or biology (and
society and the real world who consults there) would consider the same
outcome as likely, useful. Anyway, early morning stuff (here). Gavin
Melles.
