Looking for some Tuesday afternoon advice...
Has anybody had any experience of hiring in sessional teachers on a
"cover" basis? I'm doing some problem-solving at the moment which is
starting to give me a headache, namely a partly-funded new schools
outreach project- ie I have funding for the nuts and bolts of the
project but not sufficient to pay somebody to run it! This leaves me, as
a single-handed education department, with a bit of a work-load issue. I
have some funding available which has been earmarked for "facilitators"
and I have been considering hiring sessional teachers to cover taught
school visits, which is new ground both for me and for this museum. My
main concern is that our school visits tend to be quite seasonal and
variable as this is a relatively small museum and the education
programme is still in it's infancy, so I would not be able to offer
regular work, and often visit bookings can be very last minute. The
advantage of having a pool of teachers to call on would, I think, be
huge for us, and could potentially stabilise what we are able to offer
and perhaps even bring more visits into the Museum, but I'm not sure
that anybody would actually be interested in work on such an ad-hoc basis.
If anybody can offer any responses or advice I'd be really pleased to
hear from you, particularly regarding any pitfalls and information on
rates of pay that you might be willing to share!
Thanks in advance; if anybody else is interested in this I will compile
any responses and circulate them.
Best wishes,
annette
