new basilica, now known as Cluny III.
mmmm... H. may have begun the work on the new building, but i *believe* that
the major part of what we see in those fine reconstructions you list below was
done after H. died, in the teens and (particularly) the 20's --and even a bit
later, after the 1130 dedication.
an interesting article which might have slipped Under the Radar of most
med-rel listers is
Georges Duby, "Le budget de l'abbaye de Cluny entre 1080 et 1155," Annales
E.S.C. 7 (1952): 155-71.
if i remember rightly (about a 30% chance of that happening), donations from a
Spanish king (Alphonso?) supplied a large part of the rather significant
construction budget; and when those dried up, the abbey found itself somewhat
over-extended.
a very good article by Minot Kerr on the important Cluniac priory of
Paray-le-Monial (part of his dissertation) is here:
http://people.reed.edu/~mkerr/papers/thesis/prev.html
"Evidently, Lefèvre-Pontalis believed Paray's construction was funded by
direct intervention of the mother abbey. However, there is no documentary
evidence for such financial support; more importantly, his account of Cluny's
economic status during the abbacy of Peter the Venerable contradicts the now
commonly accepted view that this period was a time of economic hardship, not
conducive to construction on any grand scale." [citing Duby]

thanks, John.
