We've discussed this before, a year or two back, and I've an uneasy feeling
that I gave a different answer last time :-)
I think the answer is that that it would be normal for the abbot to be in
priest's orders - and at that date he would often be the only one to be so
ordained. So, the natural assumption would be that the abbot would be a
priest. (I suspect that the priestly quality of the abbacy came from him
being a priest ...)
