medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: John Wickstrom <[log in to unmask]>
> Dear list members, I am examining some early 12th c. illustrations of a Life
of St. Maurus from the Parisian monastery of S. Maur des Fossés.
presumably on the CD-ROM which you (or thanks to someone else on this list)
turned us on to last year.
Indiana's copy came into the F.A. lieberry last month, and it is a *very* nice
production, esp. for 20 Euros.

(third item down)
the illuminations are important, being quite rare exemplars of what
pre-"gothic" figure style looked like in the Parisian region.
btw, that site, from the médiatheque-agglo[mération]-troyes, used to have a
couple of very nice on-line exhibitions of two 12th c. mss, one the "Bible de
St. Bernard"; the other a Glossa Ordinaria which was made for "Henri de
France", the third son of Louis VI, brother of Louis VII, who left his very
opulent gig as "abbot of the royal abbeys" (i.e., the royal collegials at
Corbeil, Etampes, Melun, etc.) to become a simple monk at Clairvaux (he lasted
three years, then moved on to the sees of Beauvais and Reims).
Patricia Stirnemann, who has studied these lovely, delux productions has made
a case for their being produced in "secular" "hors-scriptoria" (a curious
oxymoron) in Chartres; and, who nose, this may even be true.
alas, i've looked everywhere on that site and can't find a trace of the
exhibition.
don't suppose anyone here has any info of what happened to it?
