There are several issues here, which I shall try to deal with. Linen-fold
panelling is predominantly secular (domestic) rather than ecclesiastical.
If found in an ecclesiastical context, yes, it would probably have been
painted, as was most woodwork, particularly ecclesiastical.
No, it was probably not intended to look like cloth - I am not aware that
anyone at the time thought that it was intended to resemble cloth:
"linen-fold panelling" is our term for it, not theirs.
