medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There is linen fold in the Wolsey rooms at Hampton Court. There might be discussions of those rooms that cast light on the question about the intent of such work.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
On a slightly different tack.
In many churchs, the screen (Rood Screen) between the nave and chancel
contained panels featuring raised linen-fold. Surviving (British)
examples are invariably plain, or have been stained and varnished. The
question is, were they once painted, and if so, were they intended to
look like cloth?
Comments, suggestions and examples would be greatly appreciated.
