These notes from a workshop session led by Joy Todd at the FUNdamental Science Training Day might be useful.
When we did a workshop on Prehistoric painting at the Museum of Farnham I think we painted sand mixed with PVA glue on thick card or paper to use as a "cave wall".
Best wishes

Subject: cave art
Hello,
I wonder if anyone would be able to help out? We are planning some
children's holiday activities with a prehistoric theme. Has anyone ever
done any cave art, cave paintings (simulated) or other prehistoric art?? How
have you gone about it, what materials did you use, what age group did you
aim for? We could perhaps use sticks to paint with , but I am unable to
figure out what to paint on. We will need to accommodate about 90 children
over 3 days, so if we're to paint, or scratch, on rock it's going to get a
bit heavy!!
I'm grateful for any ideas!
Thanks,
Lisa
